Mushroom Mutations

Time to clarify the concept of strains in the psilocybin cubensis species. We often hear terms like golden teacher, penis envy or albino penis envy when describing strains we prefer. But what does it really mean?

Let’s begin by defining the term species. Species within the fungal world refers to a group of mushrooms that share certain key characteristics, including their genetic make-up, physical appearance, and ability to interbreed. Examples of different species would be lions mane, reishi, cordyceps, amanita muscaria, psilocybin cubensis, psilocybin natalensis, etc etc.

Moving on to strains which are essentially different genetic versions of the same fungal species and can exhibit variations in phenotypic traits such as size, coloration, biochemical make-up, and growth patterns. Examples of strains are Jedi Mind Fuck, avery albino and ghost to name a few. But here’s the kicker, a lot of strains who are claimed to be different are actually the same, the difference in name is most of the time a result of the location it was found or whoever “discovered” the strain, naming it. If you test them or put them side by side, a lot of different strains will actually turn out to be the same. There’s a simpler and more organized way to categorize these subtypes within the psilocybin cubensis species and it’s through the classification system of mutations which can only be achieved through proper potency testing.

This arrangement considers concentration of psilocybin and the more there is the greater the mutation and difference in phenotype.

This whole process commences with:

M0 - A zero mutation strain containing 5-7 miligrams of psilocybin per gram of mushroom. Examples of strain names within this group include: Golden Teacher, Blue Meanie, Cambodia, Thai, Elephant Dung, Lizard King

Moving on to

M1 – this first mutation will increase potency up to contain 7-9 miligrams of psilocybin per gram of mushroom which causes a change in the fungus’ cap and stem shape. Examples of strain names within this group include: Jedi Mind Fuck, Hanzo, Trinity

M2 – a second mutation will increase potency up to contain 9-11 miligrams of psilocybin per gram of mushroom which causes a change in the fungus’ cap and stem shape as well as a decrease in the pattern of spores being released. Examples of strain names within this group include: Penis Envy, Rusty Whites, Trasher

M3 – a third mutation will increase potency up to contain 11-13 miligrams of psilocybin per gram of mushroom which causes a change in the fungus’ cap and stem shape, decrease in pattern of spores being released, as well as change of color to albino. Usually any albino mushroom can be considered M3 and beyond. Examples of strain names within this group include: Avery Albino, Hillbilly, True Albino Teacher

M4 – a fourth mutation will increase potency up to contain 13-15 miligrams of psilocybin per gram of mushroom which causes a change in the fungus’ color, cap and stem shape as well as a decrease in the pattern of spores being released. Examples of strain names within this group include: Albino Penis Envy, Ghost

M5 – a fifth mutation will increase potency up to contain 15-17 miligrams of psilocybin per gram of mushroom which causes a change in the fungus’ color, cap and stem shape as well as pattern of spores rarely being released. Examples of strain names within this group include: Shakti, APE

M6 – a sixth mutation will increase potency up to contain 17-20 miligrams of psilocybin per gram of mushroom which causes a change in the fungus’ color, cap and stem shape as well as pattern of spores never being released. Examples of strain names within this group include: Enigma, Albino Royal

It’s important to emphasize that different strains within each mutation category can have uniquely assigned traits or placebo based “personalities”, but at their core, they’re similar in how much psychoactive particles are on average carried. Although, beyond psilocybin and psilocin, there’s not enough evidence to clarify percentage of other various psychoactive compounds and their effects. So this compendium elucidating strains by sorting them as mutations based on research backed psychoactive strength within the psilocybin cubensis species is a better format to reference until further analysis has been made. I hope you found it insightful!
